The Samsung Gear Fit wearable device has been named “The Best Mobile Device” at Mobile World Congress by organisers GSMA.

The 1.84-inch screen curves around the wrist and works like a standard smartwatch in notifying the user of calls, text messages and emails when connected to a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. It runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS.

Where it differs from a smartwatch is that it offers real-time fitness coaching, personalised advice and recommendations.

It can provide this intuitive feedback through an in-built pedometer and heat rate monitor. The manufacturer claims its 210mAh battery allows for 3-4 days of typical use.

The wearables market has failed to catch fire but the industry is expecting big things. Mobile World Congress saw the launch of a number of devices including  ‘Talkband’ from Huawei, while Samsung also announced  the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches.

The Gear Fit is expected to go on sale in mid-April, no pricing details have been announced.
