The Samsung Galaxy W is a 7-inch smartphone handset, looks ridiculous

There’s undeniably a place in the market for phablets – devices which straddle the border between  phone and tablet. The HTC One Max did a good job with a 5.9-inch display; the LG G Flex had some nice features – including a 6-inch screen, and the LG G3 has only just launched but is already looking to be one of the best handsets of the year (largely thanks to how it packs a 5.5-inch display into a comparatively tiny body).

Someone somewhere, though, has to draw a line. At what point does a smartphone simply become too big to be called a phablet? Previously, we would have thought that to be a tricky question almost impossible to answer. Then we saw the Samsung Galaxy W. Just look at this stupid thing.

Samsung - Galaxy W 2

It’s got a 7-inch display. That’s well and truly into tablet territory. Not only that, but that 7-inch display is only 720p in resolution, meaning that it’ll produce a less-than-stellar 210 PPI. Its processor is only a 1.2GHz quad-core chip, the camera is 8-megapixels and, perhaps most unforgivably of all, it will come running the dated Android 4.3 Jellybean.

And for those rather underwhelming specs you’re still going to be asked to pay  499,400 Korean won – that’s about £290. That said, there’s rather little chance of this getting a UK release – nor anywhere outside of South Korea. So if you’re genuinely desperate for it, you might need to get creative and look for somewhere to import it. Or you could just buy a device that will actually fit in your trousers.
