The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini has been officially announced and while it shares the same name as its larger counter-part, this mid-range smartphone has little in common with its larger sibling.

The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini is, as expected, is a 4-inch (480 x 800-pixel) smartphone running the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, beating the full-sized Samsung Galaxy S3 to the latest features, as the larger phone is only now starting to see the update roll out.

In terms of style, the two devices share a similarity with the same glossy oval shape. But weighing in at just 111.5g, the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini is seriously lighter. However, when it comes to tech specs, the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini is certainly more mainstream, coming with a 1GHz dual-core processor, rather than the powerhouse quad-core CPU of the larger Samsung Galaxy S III.

The 5-Megapixel camera is also rather mainstream but is capable of handling 720p video recording with ease. With Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and Wi-Fi on-board this is a nicely connected smartphone. The battery is claimed to be 1500mAh unit, so we should see a reasonable battery life from this mid-range smartphone.

Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini are already starting to appear online, pricing it competitively around the £298 (inc. VAT) mark.

What do you think? Are you tempted by the new Samsung Android phone or will you be going for the larger powerhouse version? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
