Phonebloks – mobiles meet Lego

And now for something completely different. Meet Phonebloks, which is something of a cross between handsets and Lego blocks.

It’s still in the concept stages at the moment, but Dutch designer Dave Hakkens is certainly excited about it. It’s essentially a mobile phone that has a replace screen and changeable blocks. The individual blocks make up the core of the phone. They could cover the battery, processor and other things.

So, in effect, if you wanted to upgrade your handset, you could buy a new processesor block. If you needed to update the battery, just buy a new block. Seems a lot less expesnive than a whole new phone, doesn’t it?

In fact, that’s where the idea came from. Around six months ago Hakkens took apart his favourite camera only to find a broken lens motor. The company told him the camera would have to be replaced, which seemed like a waste to him. The idea grew out of having a device that wouldn’t need replacing.

Right now you can sign up to support the project. Don’t expect it to be anything like a top of the range smartphone, but the potential for customisation could make it a different beast entirely.
