Not quite the ‘phone sex’ you had in mind? Almost one in ten Americans admits to using their smartphone while they’re between the sheets, according to a new online survey

A study released today by online payments company Jumio has revealed some surprising statistics about the strange places Americans are using their phones.

The Mobile Consumer Habits study revealed that almost one in five respondents admitted to using their phone in church, 12% said they had taken their phone into the shower before and 9% of all respondents admitted to having a peek at their handset when they were getting hands-on between the sheets. Among the young the figure gets even higher with 20% of 18-34 year-olds admitting to using their smartphone during sex.

Over a third also admitted to using their phone in a movie theater and only slightly fewer said they had used their smartphone on a dinner date.

The study also revealed information on how many smartphone users password protect their devices, with singletons being more likely to conceal their information than their married counterparts. Perhaps being a little bit paranoid isn’t a bad thing though, with nearly half of 18-34 year olds admitting to snooping on someone else’s phone.

This survey was conducted online with respondents from the US by Harris Interactive and it might be worth taking with a pinch of salt. Only 2021 people were questioned, of whom just 1102 respondents are smartphone owners/users.
