Nintendo is “irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer in the console business”, according to Naughty Dog cofounder and former president of failed publisher THQ, Jason Rubin.

Rubin cited sales figures for Nitendo’s Wii U console, which total 3.61 million globally since launch, and expects to reach nine million by the end of March 2014.

This is compared to Sony’s Playstation 4, which has sold over 2.1 million units since it went on sale on December 1.

Rubin also criticised Nintendo’s decision to keep games like Mario and Zelda exclusive to its consoles.

“It is a crime that we do not play those games on the systems that we have,” he said.
