What looks to be a brand new Samsung device has leaked via TENAA, China’s regulatory authority on electronics. It may look like a Samsung product through and through, but that doesn’t mean that we can actually tell what it is.
One look at the pictures and you’re immediately reminded of the Galaxy range of smartphones. The only problem is that this device’s display is a whopping seven inches – that would make for one awful large phone, even by Samsung’s standards (last year’s Mega had a 6.3-inch screen, and that was more than enough). So could it be a compact tablet? The ‘T’ in its product code, SM-T2558, might suggest so. But then you’d have to wonder why bother when there are so many options in the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy NotePRO range.
If it is a giant phone, then the specs wouldn’t really match up. Surely the main reason behind buying a mammoth handset is because it can cram in more power, yet this new device is only 720p in resolution with 1.5 GHz of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and 8 GB of internal storage. It also runs on Android 4.3 Jellybean as opposed to the latest 4.4 KitKat, which the Galaxy S5 uses.
The range of options is something which lovers of Samsung appreciate most about the company – it’s easy to find a product which is just for you, simply because there’s so many. But the company has released 350 smartphones and tablets in the last ten or so years. When is enough enough? Could this weird phone/tablet hybrid prove to be a bit of a tough sell? It should be easier to judge when we know a little more about what it’s actually supposed to do (presuming that Samsung knows that itself).
