MWC 2017: OPPO’s optical zoom is one year in the making

OPPO took wraps off the worlds first smartphone with a five times Dual-Camera Zoom at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The company has been working on the technology for nearly a year, filing over 50 patents for the technology. The periscope technology takes inspiration from submarines as the telephoto lens is shifted by 90 degrees which leaves space for a three times deep zoom. The design also eliminates the camera bump, a common problem with optical zooms in the past. Currently the highest zoom a consumer can achieve on a smartphone is two times which, according to OPPO, disappoints many mobile users in today’s market.

Staying Stable

The camera module from OPPO also features a new Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) technology that is incorporated into the telephoto lens instead of being applied to the wide-angle lens. The sensor itself has over 50 individual parts, which work together sensing vibrations in real time and compensating.

Staying Slim

The periscope-style technology helps to keep the camera module slim, coming in at 5.7 mm thick. In fact, the five times zoom from OPPO is thinner than the competition’s two times zoom which is 10 per cent thicker.

OPPO didn’t specify when the sensor will make its debut, but it will no doubt make its way into the company’s 2017 flagship.
