Samsung and Microsoft have announced the Galaxy Book at MWC in Barcelona, a 2-in-1 device running on the Windows 10 desktop operating system.
The two manufacturers also announced a partnership that allows other companies to take advantage of hardware, software, solutions and services from both Samsung and Microsoft.
Available in 10.6-inch and 12-inch models, the larger Galaxy Book ships with the latest 7th generation Intel Core i5 processors. The smaller variant uses a more frugal Intel Core m3 processor. RAM configurations include either 4GB or 8GB, while internal SSD storage is 128GB or 256GB.
The screen on the Samsung Galaxy Book varies depending on size, with a 1440p AMOLED panel on the larger version and a FullHD IPS LCD display on the smaller one. The bigger panel also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR), meaning colours will have a much greater contrast and impact versus conventional displays. Both implement a detachable keyboard design and offer full S Pen support.
Power of the S Pen
Much like the Galaxy Tab S3, this includes support the new S Pen, which offers up to 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and angle support. The last feature is something unique that will appeal to artists, as it gives the pen an ability to measure what angle you’re holding the pen at. This is then incorporated into your strokes when using compatible software such as Adobe Photoshop.
Both devices also include 5 megapixel front cameras which support Windows Hello login capabilities. The company has made improvements to Samsung Flow, an application that allows users to sync their Galaxy devices with Microsoft so the app communicates properly with services like Windows Hello. There’s also a 5 megapixel rear camera on the 10-inch model and an upgraded 13 megapixel shooter on the larger 12-inch.
Samsung claims battery life for both devices is around 10 hours which is a solid figure, but we’ll have to wait and see if this is true.
Availability
Currently, there is no word on pricing or release date for the Samsung Galaxy Book. With the Galaxy Tab S3 expected to go on sale around March 31st, we would expect it to be available sometime around then.
