Welcome to the LG Wine Smart, a hybrid smartphone and flip phone.

For those who love the Star Trek-inspired design of a flip phone but still need the functionality of a smartphone, LG have announced the new Wine Smart. With the upper screen turned into a touchscreen and the lower half still retaining the physical buttons familiar to flip phone users, the two-in-one phone settles neatly into its niche.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to miss out on the smartphone revolution because they prefer a particular phone design over another,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “With LG Wine Smart, they won’t have to.”

Specifications

Running on Android Lollipop 5.1.1, the Wine Smart’s 1.1GHz quad-core processor can handle the newest apps with little problem. A 3.2 inch screen gives a crisp view of the 3×3-icon display, while hotkeys set into the numeric keypad offer immediate access to key features. With the camera, contacts list, text messaging and phone dialer at your fingertips, that there’s no need to search the app screen every time.

The 4G-ready, wireless-capable phone has a 4GB hard drive and 1GB of memory, which can be expanded via a MicroSD card. It also comes in two colour options, burgundy and navy blue. The only minor drawback is the cameras; the rear camera supports a 3 megapixel camera, but the front camera is a VGA – aka 0.3mp.

The LG Wine Smart is due for international release later this month in countries that include France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Kazakhstan, Japan, and others. Price and carrier details will be announced locally at the time of launch.
