What is Kojima’s super-secret new project?

Earlier today we reported that Hideo Kojima had posted a tease of a new project on Twitter. It was about as vague as things get, naming the project ‘super confidential’ and showing only a picture of three other colleagues in a meeting, supposedly discussing said project.

So the big question on everyone’s minds ‘ what is it?

Well, actually, if you think past the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V, there’s a range of things the minds at Kojima Productions could be cooking up. Let’s take a quick rundown.

[alert type=alert-blue]Metal Gear Rising 2[/alert]

We’d pin this as the most likely option. Metal Gear Rising had a long, torturous development cycle including cancellations and delays. But when Platnium Games resurrected the project last year it was met with critical success. It’s not hard to imagine that Kojima and Platinum are collaborating on a second adventure for Raiden and his cyborg dog.

Ooor it could simply be more Metal Gear. The franchise has seen endless spin-offs in the past few years and there’s plenty of platforms it’s yet to branch out on. Plus Kojima seems completely unable to move away from the series no matter how much he tries. Before MGSV became a reality we know that Kojima had pitched another Metal Gear game starting The Boss from MGS3. Perhaps it could be something to do with that?

[alert type=alert-blue]Zone of the Enders 3[/alert]

As much as we’d like this one to be true, we doubt it very much. After Kojima spent much of 2012 and 2013 hinting that Zone of the Enders 3 was on track, development of the project seemed to fall through last year. Still, nothing official has been said on the game and it’s possible that it’s been resurrected in one form or another. A sequel to the much-loved PS2 games is long overdue.

[alert type=alert-blue]Something New[/alert]

Until the reveal of MGSV, it was anyone’s guess what Hideo Kojima was actually working on. He’d promised that 4 would be his last Metal Gear game, but got pulled back in for Peace Walker. All that time he was tweeting constant teases for upcoming projects like ‘Project Ogre’, which is thought to be MGSV. But then during a demo of Konami’s Fox Engine at a previous E3 Kojima showed footage of a child running around a jungle. Sure, it was just demo footage, but perhaps there was more meaning behind it.

Perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Kojima has a history of overhyping announcements (see last year’s classic Snake for MGSV tweet) and nowhere does it actually say ‘game’. Still, we’d jump at the chance to play something new from the Metal Gear mastermind. We doubt we’ll hear anything more official until the release of the full MGSV, though.
