Face swapping is popular again, so Facebook are playing catch up by acquiring mobile app Masquerade.
Zuckerberg made the announcement via video with an Iron Man filter, using Masquerade (MSQRD). “No, I haven’t also built an Iron Man suit. I’m using this app Masquerade, that lets you put real time filters on your videos. And today I’m excited to share that the team behind Masquerade is joining Facebook,” said Zuckerberg.
MSQRD CEO, Eugene Nevgen wrote in a blog post: “video communication is exploding. At Masquerade, we’ve worked hard to make video more fun and engaging by creating filters that enhance and alter your appearance. Now, we’re excited to join forces with Facebook and bring the technology to even more people. Within Facebook, we’re going to be able to reach people at a scale like never before.
How Facebook will be integrating the face filters remains to be seen. Facebook are capitilising on the recent resurge in popularity of the face swapping craze, reignited by Snapchat. The response from Snapchat users has been incredible with many users sharing their face swaps in other social media platforms.
