Clearly unsatisfied with just being the world’s most popular instant messaging service, WhatsApp will soon offer iOS users the option of making free voice calls.
The feature, which will be available for iOS devices in the next few weeks, was announced by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton at Facebook’s F8 developer conference last week.
The Facebook-owned company launched the voice calling service on Android last month, but it is currently only available to Android users on an invite-only basis.
Users who are able to use the new voice calling feature can make direct phone calls to contacts. This differs from WhatsApp’s voice messages feature, which allows users to send recorded voice messages by holding a microphone icon above their phone’s keyboard.
Facebook purchased WhatsApp for around $19bn last year and the messaging service currently has around 700 million global users.
Other new features added to the messaging app since that massive purchase include WhatsApp Web, a service allowing users to send and receive WhatsApp messages from their computer desktop.
