Following the announcement of Samsung’s Ativ S and Nokia’s Lumia 820 and 920, HTC has now revealed two new Windows Phone 8 devices of its own – the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S.

Taking a leaf out of Nokia’s book, the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S by HTC eschew the usual black and silver smartphone look in favour of a choice of blue, black, yellow and red designs.

The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is the flagship model and packs a 4.3-inch 720p HD screen. A 1.5GHz processor powers the device along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage offered as standard.

An 8-Megapixel camera equipped with a BSI sensor sits on the rear and captures 1080p HD video, while a 2.1-Megapixel camera on the front uses a wide-angle lens for greater coverage and also records at 1080p.

Beats Audio technology is of course in place on the Windows Phone 8X by HTC and the handset also comes with NFC and a Gorilla Glass screen, but unfortunately no MicroSD slot for expanding storage.

The Windows Phone 8S by HTC is a smaller and more affordable option and comes equipped with a 4-inch screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage, which can be upgraded via MicroSD.

Beats Audio technology is again in place, as well as a 5-Megapixel rear-facing camera, but there is no front-facing camera on the Windows Phone 8S for snapping portrait photos or making video calls.

Of course the key feature of both the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S by HTC is the use of the Windows Phone 8 operating system.

And with Windows Phone 8 set for release in late October, HTC tells us the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S by HTC will be on sale within days of the operating system’s launch. Pricing is still to be confirmed.

Will the Windows Phone 8X and 8S by HTC push Windows Phone to the heights it deserves, or will they get lost among Samsung and Nokia’s new handsets? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
