HMD Global Confirms All 2017 Nokia Handsets Will Get Android P

HMD Global Philippines Country Manager, Shannon Mead confirmed on Saturday that all existing Nokia smartphones would be upgraded to Android P.

The list includes recently released Nokia 8, 6, 5 and 3 handsets. HMD Global reintroduced the Nokia brand earlier this year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The company chose to ship handsets with a stock version of the Android operating system, after failing to produce a skin which was superior. By having these handsets run a stock version, it enables HMD Global to push out security updates at lightning fast speeds. In some cases, these updates have been quicker than on official Google Pixel and Nexus handsets.

Currently, HMD Global is s committed to two further OS updates for its 2017 lineup. Both of these will be ‘major’. Android P is currently in development and will likely get a beta release sometime in the winter, following up with a hard launch at the I/O conference in May 2018. With confirmation that one of these will be Android P, it’s nice to know that the company will be supporting the handsets well into 2018.

The company is currently working on an even higher-end flagship dubbed ‘Nokia 9’, which is expected to include a bezel-less screen and high-end hardware.
