The popular Google Assistant launches today on iOS in select European markets and India.
Google Assistant has been available on iOS since May this year but was previously only available in the US market. The search giant has today announced that the popular virtual assistant will start rolling out in select European countries and India. So far, the list includes Germany, France and the United Kingdom. To use Google Assistant, users will need to open the application, as Apple does not offer any sort of low-level API access for third-party developers. You do get a widget, however some users are already reporting that the update has stopped it working. While Siri will still take paramount on the device, we can see the wealth of features which Google Assistant offers giving users a definite incentive to switch.
Although the launch signifies a big step for Google taking the fight to Siri, this isn’t the first time that Apple users have been able to access the assistant. Anyone who had previously downloaded the Allo! messaging app could find Google Assistant listed as one of their contact and message it freely. This even included people outside of the USA.
