A foldable Samsung phone is in the pipeline but the president of Samsung Mobile has refuted any claims that they will be releasing one soon.

It’s no secret Samsung are making a foldable phone, but don’t expect it any time soon according to president of Samsung mobile, Koh Dong-Jin. Samsung showed off a slightly funny concept trailer, showing a device with a bendable screen that will get you looks from attractive women in coffee shops. Right.

Speaking to The Korea Times, Dong-Jin is hoping to create a ripple effect in the industry once a foldable Samsung phone is released. At this moment in time consumer-friendly foldable phones are just not possible “considering the status of [current] technology.”

Koh continued stating “serious changes in software and user experience” are required before such an innovation can take place. Assuming Samsung will continue to use Android, Google will need to look at creating APIs ready for future Android iterations, for bendy screens.

Foldable Samsung phone or make up compact mirror?

Currently the smartphone world has dubbed Samsung’s innovation in the works as the Samsung Galaxy X. Patents have been spotted revealing a clam shell design, reminiscent of a make-up mirror. It folds clean in half, decimating the size to make it more portable.

Samsung reportedly is calling this Project Valley. Rivals LG are also making their own foldable screen, it resembles a roll up newspaper. LG could beat Samsung to the punch, in terms of getting their first. It’s not about who did it first, but who did it right. 2017 is looking to be an interesting year for smartphone technology, hopefully we’ll see some flexible action at Mobile World Congress 2017.

What do you think about bendy or rolled up screens? Is this the future of smartphone technology or a passing fad? Let us know in the comments.
