The Samsung Galaxy S5 may not have even launched in the West yet, but first details of an upcoming compact version of the handset have been leaked.

The usually reliable Samsung fan-site Sam Mobile  has revealed the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini (or the ‘SM-G800’, if you’re not into conformist, commercial nicknames). The device looks set to be an improvement on the rather poor Galaxy S4 Mini in almost every respect. It will have a 4.5 inch SuperAMOLED 720p display and run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Specifics on the processor are yet to be mentioned, although it will be provided by Qualcomm – most likely a Snapdragon 400.

Other (supposed) facts that we (sort of) know of are its 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, coupled with a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, 1.5 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, an IR blaster and a 2,100 mAh battery akin to the one found in the Galaxy S4 Mini. What’s more, just like the larger S5 it should also be IP67 certified – i.e. waterproof.

If the giant smartphones of modern marketplace aren’t to your liking and you don’t mind taking a small technical handicap, the S5 Mini could be a very valid option. Pricing will presumably announced with the official reveal of the device, with a release set for some time in June.
