With continuous, regular updates and features being added to Facebook Messenger we are now on the cusp of the biggest change yet. Facebook has begun rolling out the ability to send money directly to friends within the app.

The feature is currently being trialled in the US, with more regions on the horizon.

First-time users will need to link a debit card to their Messenger app and set up a password. After that, you can pay anyone you chat with with the tap of a button. iPhone users of models 5s and up will be able to use Touch ID for verification, too.

The feature will be coming to both the iOS and Android versions of the app, as well as the in-browser version on the main Facebook site.

Facebook has also emphasised the security of this new feature, stating: “We use layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards. A team of anti-fraud specialists monitor for suspicious purchase activity to help keep accounts safe.”

Since rather controversially forcing Facebook Messenger upon us a short while ago, we’ve actually been rather impressed with the app. Yes, it’s still yet another app you need to stay in touch with your friends, but Facebook hasn’t rested on its laurels. Updates have been frequent and regular, and its interface is very clean and quick. This new feature is certainly something to set it apart from the WhatsApps and Vibers of the world.
