Dial-a-minicab ridesharing service Uber offers 50% off of journeys in London during the Tube strikes

Almost 3.5 million people ride the London Underground every day. The vast majority of those take it, at least in part, for commuter reasons. Getting to work is important. So when London Underground workers go on strike, there are a million or two people left without a means of getting to their jobs. Here at What Mobile, we’re all human. We put on our trousers one leg at a time, just like you. And we have also been completely screwed by this latest set of strikes, set to take place this week and the next. That’s why we consider it not a professional courtesy, but a  civic duty to inform you that there is a way around these upcoming strikes.

Popular ridesharing and minicab-dialling service Uber is offering 50% off of all journeys throughout the hours of the Tube strike (which starts tonight at 9:00pm.  Ugh). This is obviously great news. The Uber app is available for Android and iOS, and is completely free. Once downloaded you simply enter in your personal details and snap a picture of your preferred card for payment. From that point onwards you’re all set – you simply tap a button to call a minicab to your current location (as determined by the GPS on your device) and you’re away. It even shows you how far your driver is from you and how long until their arrival. Payment is all handled through the app, so you never have to worry about forking over cash or even re-entering lengthy debit card details.

The one catch to this 50% discount is that it only applies to rideshared journeys. The way this works is that once you get in your minicab you have to select a pal who also has Uber, so that the app can split the bill between the two of you. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you from splitting it with someone who isn’t even in the minicab and just reimbursing them later. In fact, as far as we can tell, the offer seems to apply even if you aren’t actually within London. The code to receive your discount is “KEEPLONDONMOVING”, and is usable up to 20 times during the strike period for journeys which cost no more than £50 (although unless you have one hell of a commute that shouldn’t be a problem).
