Google has rolled out Data Saver mode for Chrome, to reduce smartphone data usage.

According to the US tech giant a fifth of adult smartphone users now do most of their online browsing on their mobile device. With Data Saver mode smartphone browsers can save up to 70% of their data and tolerate slower internet speeds. Data is saved by only downloading around 50% of the page, before loading the page, Google will “optimise” the page and do so. For image heavy sites there is the option to fully load the page to enjoy the site as intended.

Android users in India and Indonesia will be the first to get the new feature, rolling out elsewhere will be happening int he coming months. To switch on Data Saver mode, go to Settings > Bandwidth management > Reduce data usage.
