January 12, 2012

The world’s biggest gadget convention has featured more phone debuts than ever before. As Sony reveal the Xperia S, a host of other manufacturers have used CES to unveil new phones early, while those absent are saving their announcements for Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona next month.

HTC Titan II 16 megapixel camera uncovered

The original Titan was the biggest Windows phone and this mighty upgrade adds a 16 megapixel camera with a wide angle lens and dual LED Flash. CES is an American show and many announcements are for the US market and, naturally, the HTC Titan II is for the American market and HTC has not yet confirmed a UK release. Still, it’s a sign that HTC are now focusing on new camera tech after conquering the music phone market with Beats technology and headphones for the new HTC Sensation range. LG Spectrum screen beats iPhone Retina display?

After a break from from the phone market until recently – hello LG Prada 3.0 – LG has revealed the LG Spectrum, another giant phone for the US market which hits the shelves next week, minus Android 4.0. The 4.5inch screen puts it in the same bracket as super size phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus. Interestingly, the 1280 x 720 resolution means it has a sharper screen than the Galaxy Nexus and packs a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor.

Huawei create world’s thinnest phone at 6.68mm

2012 is the year when Huawei really break free from producing great budget phones and turn their attention to developing breakthrough tech. Hot on the heels of the MediaPad – the first Huawei tablet, the Ascend P1 S has nicked the ‘S’ model name enhancer from Sony and Samsung and with good reason – it’s a powerhouse. Clocking in at 1.5 Ghz, seemingly the smartphone standard for dual-core phones, the Ascend P1 S includes an 8 megapixel camera and a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera. The slim profile explains the tiny 4GB of storage but MicroSD options easily solve that problem. The screen is a 4.3inch Super AMOLED display with a 960 x 540 pixel resolution. 1080p video has been confirmed and the only question mark is the availability and price of the phone – currently, Huawei will  only confirm ‘2012’ as a date though we’re eager to see if the manufacturer can undercut high-end phones in the same way it has managed to do in the budget Android market with the Huawei Blaze.

Sony Xperia S offers 32GB storage and world-class screen

Breaking free of Ericsson, Sony has created a stylish Android that screams luxury in every department from the 12 megapixel Exmor R camera to the stylish range of accessories which include a rather clever watch. The screen is a HD Reality Display which sounds every inch the rival to Apple’s Retina display – read our Xperia S preview and find out more.

Intel join the ‘super phone’ race

Lenovo has strategically joined forces with Intel to manufacture the Lenovo K800 Android phone which houses the Intel Atom processor, previously found in notebook PCs. Build and style look under par but as the industry prepares for a surge of quad-core processors, you can bet Intel will be pushing hard to become a bigger player in the phone market in 2012.
