Apple have released a fix for the network hindering bug Vodafone reported in iOS 6.1
As reported by Vodafone, some iPhone 4S handsets which had upgraded to the then latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system were causing issues with 3G performance.
Some customers experienced difficulty connecting to the network to make or receive calls, texts or Internet connection and such problems were intermittent, Vodafone said in this blog post.
Vodafone said the fault was a software issue, ie at Apple’s end, saying Apple was working on a solution and recommended that anyone who had not installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4S should delay until Apple released a fix.
Vodafone told corporate customers that congestion issues could be caused not just for iPhone 4S users but other users in the area if a “significant number” of iPhone 4S handsets connected to a network in a given area, The Register reported.
And lo, Vodafone this morning said Apple had released a new version of its mobile OS that fixed these 3G performance issues, iOS 6.1.1, and that this would deal with the 3G issues for iPhone 4S users who had upgraded to iOS 6.1
iOS 6.1 itself was released at the end of January.
Other networks reporting all’s well
Three mobile said it had not experienced any similar problems.
O2 said it also had not had any reported problems from customers with the iOS 6.1 upgrade for iPhone 4S handsets.
Everything Everywhere would not comment at this time.
Three Austria confirmed it had had problems with iOS 6.1 on iPhone 4S handsets. A company spokesperson said the operator had informed customers who were using the 4S by text and “worked together with Apple” to fix the problem at the same time.
No all customers who upgraded faced problems, the network said. To be safe, a text was sent to all 4S customers to warn them against downloading the new OS version.
An Apple spokesperson said the update fixes an issue which “could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S” but would not comment on what the specific issue was.
