Android HTCs could be adding Windows Phone OS, Microsoft hopes

We’re fans of the Windows Phone OS at What Mobile. That said, it’s hard to deny that Microsoft’s service is currently lagging behind the competition. News today suggests that the company is taking interesting measures to combat this.

Apparently Microsoft has turned to HTC for help in its fight. The outfit has asked the Taiwanese manufacturer to start including Windows Phone on its own Android HTC handsets, giving users the chance to switch between the two and sample the less common of them. Apparently the fees for licensing the OS would be significantly lower, if not completely eradicated, should HTC decide to play ball. Bear in mind that these talks are private and preliminary, so nothing’s confirmed just yet.

Two operating systems running on one phone is a strange concept, but it might just give Microsoft a leg up in some cases. Still, HTC is an odd choice given the company’s current issues (including those dire Q3 results we reported on this morning). Some Android HTC handsets are selling quite well though, so Microsoft would do well to bring its OS over to the more popular phones. We haven’t heard if Microsoft is talking to the likes of Samsung or LG as other avenues for this method.

If true, then we’d certainly be interested in seeing how it’s implemented.
