Twitter has only just removed the restriction on contacting people who don’t follow you back, but it already has its sights set on becoming a real juggernaut in the messaging industry. According to a new report out today from AllThingsD, Twitter plans on revamping its Direct Messaging functionality with a standalone app to take on the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Whilst not much is known about the future of its messaging products, unnamed sources have claimed that Twitter has met with employees from MessageMe, possibly to discuss the future of Twitter’s Direct Messaging capabilities.
