The Northern line is the worst Underground line for mobile phone thefts.

According to claims data from tens of thousands of MobileInsurance.co.uk policies, the Northern line was the worst Tube line for mobile thefts, followed by the Jubilee, the District line, the London Overground and then the Bakerloo line, the company said.

By contrast, the safest tube line for mobile phone thefts was the Central line, followed by the Circle line, Hammersmith and City, Victoria and then the Metropolitan line.

The most commonly reported mobile phone thefts occurred between Camden Town and Angel on the Northern line, followed by West Croydon to Canada Water on the London Overground.

Lambeth North to Piccadilly Circus on the Bakerloo Line was third, followed by West Ham to White Chapel on the District Line and then Hackney Central to Camden Road on the London Overground.

Break on the District

The Tube line you were most likely to lose or leave your phone on accidentally was the Central line, while the District was the line you were most likely to break your phone on (probably out of frustration at the innumerable delays).

Women were three times as likely to have their phone stolen on the Underground than men, MobileInsurance.co.uk said, and people were more likely to have phones stolen at a station than while on the Tube – presumably because it’d be pretty awkward standing next to your victim for the three minutes it took for the red signal to change before you could escape.

Those aged 25 to 30 were at most risk of having their phone stolen while on the Tube, which matches up with Metropolitan Police stats, which say the most common profile for victims of phone theft were young professionals likely to be between the ages of 20 and 30 years old, at entertainment venues in London or other public places.

According to the data, more than three quarters of mobile phone thieves were male, MobileInsurance.co.uk said.  For the full infographic, see here.

Phones most common item stolen

In January, the Met released a new series of ads focussing on mobile phone theft.

It said phones were the most common item stolen, making up on average 70% of items taken in personal robberies and iPhone accounted for about half of all phones stolen.

Between April and September last year, 28,800 iPhones, out of a total of 56,680 mobiles were reported stolen in London, the Met said, equating to 70 iPhones, and 157 phones of all types being stolen on average per day.
