WhatsApp Gold scam returns with new name

Another poor attempt at a WhatsApp scam has hit the internet. If you see anything with the words ‘WhatsApp Elegant Gold’, walk away from the keyboard slowly and breathe.

You may vaguely remember a WhatsApp scam in 2014 titled ‘WhatsApp Gold‘ which promised users the ability to find out who blocked them and other fake features. Now we have a new kid on the block. Or perhaps it’s a case of the emperors new clothes. I can’t really tell.

The newest scam is titled ‘WhatsApp Elegant Gold’, essentially adding an extra word onto the prefix. It offers no change to the formula, opting to scam users in exactly the same way it did before.

The URL in question is whatsappforfree(dot)com and thankfully, it is flagged as a phishing website in most popular browsers. The URL promotes the scam, asking you to enter your mobile number and agree to the terms. The page looks fairly polished and could fool those who are a little aloof with their browsing habits.

After entering your details, you’ll then be taken to a page which asks you to refer the website to 10 friends. Once this is done, all you get is a blank survey page and nothing else. It’s worth noting that you’ll have also given the scammers access to your friends too, so it’s worth warning them if you manage to get caught in the fray.
