WATCH: Tesco’s Google Glass app will let you order food by looking at the barcode

We’ve all been there, waking up in the morning to find that we forgot to buy milk and realising we have to make the trek to the nearest shop.

Well if you’re lucky enough to own a pair of Google Glass specs then you may never face that dilemma again, thanks to Tesco.

The R&D geeks at the supermarket chain have created a prototype app for Google Glass (is there anything Tesco can’t do?) that allows the wearer to scan a product’s barcode to conveniently add items to their virtual basket.

Additionally, a quick glance at a product’s barcode will also bring up the item’s nutritional information. Although we imagine that function may be irrelevant as most people will probably just end up using it to buy toilet paper when they realise they’ve run out.

Tesco admits the app may not be ideal for a consumer’s weekly shop but should come in handy for micro-transactions or impulse buys – or if you’re feeling plain lazy.

Check out the official promo video of the new app above. The pov clip shows a Google Glass user making a cup of coffee at home before she realises that she’s run out of milk. A quick scan of her milk’s barcode brings up the price of the product on a second screen and allows her to place the item in her online shopping basket. Shortly after, a Tesco delivery man brings over her order. Hurrah! Now she can make her coffee, and all thanks to her £1,000 augmented reality specs.
