Vodafone improves data roaming in Europe (some of it)

Vodafone is increasing the mobile data allowance for customers roaming in (selected) European countries, from 5MB to 25MB a day.

Unless you’re on a £40 a month (or higher) contract on a consumer tariff, or a selected business tariff, there will be a £2 a day subscription fee for this increased allowance, or £10 per month.

In the countries (listed below) you will be able to consume 25MB of data per day, while in other locations it will remain at 5MB. Vodafone equates 25MB as being 250 emails, 500 accesses to Facebook, 25 minutes of video on YouTube or downloading 65 maps.

The countries offering 25MB of data a day are:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Czech Republic
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Spain
  • Switzerland

What Mobile has for some time regarded data roaming as being excessive, and even a 25MB allowance per day is a drop in the ocean – especially with the need to pay for an additional subscription on top in many cases. However, it’s a step in the right direction and hopefully will trigger some much-needed competition.
