Toshiba launches TG01 multimedia device

It’s the size of the screen that is going to excite most users, but don’t expect chunky pixels thanks to its Wide-VGA resolution display (480×800 pixels).

The TG01 is just 9.9mm thick but still packs a punch in the features department, with Wi-Fi, HSDPA & HSUPA, GPS and integrated accelerator/motion sensor that allows automatic rotation and movement control of certain functions (e.g. a simple shake to answer a call, or switching applications by tilting the phone left and right). The microSDHC card slot will also support cards of up to 32GB capacity.

The 3D user interface is customisable, although it will still sit above the standard Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system (not V6.5 which will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress). It’s unclear at this time whether the device is ready to take the new operating system as an upgrade when it is released later in the year.

The TG01 also boasts full Flash support, which is quite processor intensive. No problem here, however, as Toshiba has used the new Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (see our feature here) running at 1GHz.

The handset will be out by the summer.
