Tapping it in: Barclaycard launches contactless payment wearables

Barclaycard has launched three new wearable payment devices; a wristband, key fob, and sticker.

Each of these three devices will use NFC contactless payment technology, the same technology in contactless credit and debit cards that enables you to pay for goods with just a tap. You can use these devices to pay for transactions of up to £20. This limit will rise to £30 later this year.

Users will be able to use bPay to manage funds on these devices. bPay is open to anyone with a UK-registered Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card, not just Barclays and Barclaycard customers. You can add funds either online, a multi-platform mobile app or by setting auto top-up.

Mike Saunders, Managing Director of Digital Consumer Payments at Barclaycard said, “We’re in the midst of a sweeping change in the way we pay, with cash-dominated transactions being replaced by ‘touch and go’ contactless technology that has made it easier, safer and faster to make low-value payments.”

“We’re leading the innovation that will enable everyone to pay in a convenient, flexible, and secure way.”

All three devices will be on sale from bPay on July 1, which is likely before Apple Pay launches later in the month.

You can also buy the new Barclays devices on the high street from August. Prices start from £14.99 for the bPay Sticker, £19.99 for the fob and £24.99 for the bPay Band.
