Swords & Soldiers game review

The arrival of WiiWare hit Swords & Soldiers on the iPhone shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to those who played the game on its original platform.

A side-scrolling castle vs castle game, the simple wiimote controls couldn’t be more suited to a touchscreen re-invention.

Indeed, Swords & Soldiers on iOS looks and plays wonderfully. The basic aim is to get your tribe (either Viking, Aztec, or Chinese) to batter the opponent’s defenses using a selection of surreal and quirky troops and spells.

While simple to play thanks to the side-on viewpoint and always-visible buttons, the game hides a fair amount of depth behind its cartoony visuals. A long campaign mode, multiple mini-games, and a skirmish mode do much to keep interest high.

The only real blemish is the lack of multiplayer (either local or online), but this shouldn’t dissuade you from checking out this inviting and entertaining strategy game.
