Samsung software getting big improvement focus, half of R&D force

We know that, for the most part, Samsung has got its hardware business down. You need look no further than the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 for proof (Gear? What’s a Gear?). But Samsung software isn’t quite up to snuff, the company has admitted.

As Wall Street Journal reports, Samsung Vice Chairman & CEO Kwon Oh-hyun has admitted as much, making comparisons to the Red Sox baseball team. He noted that while the Red Sox were the best at batting in the 2013 season, their pitching efforts were mediocre. Apply that metaphor here and we can see what he’s talking about.

Apparently half of the company’s R&D force is now devoted to software. Hopefully, then, we should see improvements around the time of 2014 hardware announcements, which is thought to consist of the Galaxy S5 and perhaps a bigger tablet.

Compant president Lee Sang-hoon backed up the CEO’s statements, adding: “Industry-wide tech development is shifting from hardware to software.”

Hopefully this Samsung software focus doesn’t just translate to a load of new bloatware on the company’s new devices.
