Samsung quietly announces Galaxy A8 in China

Samsung has quietly dropped the new Galaxy A8 over in China, which has now taken the mantle as the company’s slimmest smartphone ever.

After plenty of rumours and speculation Samsung has today unveiled the Galaxy A8, the company’s slimmest smartphone to date. The handset was discovered on the Chinese regional website and will be only 5.9mm thick.

Less weight, same power

It carries a metal frame much like other devices in the Galaxy range and features a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display. At only 151 grams, it’s incredibly light for a smartphone let alone a phablet. Powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615, Samsung has adjusted the cores to run at different frequencies. One cluster of four will hit 1.5 GHz, whereas the others will only reach 1 GHz. RAM is a respectable 2GB, with 16 or 32GB internal memory that is expandable via microSD. Battery life is a solid 3,050 mAh and there will also be a fingerprint reader to give it that premium finish.

Availability

The rear camera offers an impressive 16 megapixels, which may draw comparisons to the Galaxy S6. However, previous rumours suggest that this won’t be the case, as the pixel sizes have been reduced to accommodate for the thinner frame. This likely means that the overall sensor size will be smaller too. No idea when it will ship over here but we would be surprised if it didn’t arrive at some point in the near future. Currently announced colour options include black, gold and the classic Samsung white.
