Qualcomm develops wearable chipset

Microprocessor giant Qualcomm has today announced a number of new processors including one aimed squarely at wearables.

Qualcomm has today announced a new processor aimed solely at wearable devices. The new Snapdragon Wear 2100 is based on the Snapdragon 400; a chipset that is already commonly used in various wearables such as the Huawei Watch and LG G Watch R.

The new chip is 30% smaller than the current 400 and uses 25% less power, which should allow for slimmer devices and improved battery. The company also announced a plethora of entry-level and mid-range chips, comprising the Snapdragon 425, 435 and 625. They also announced the X16, which is the first commercial LTE modem to support gigabit speeds. While not much use currently, the X16 could future proof a lot of devices for the dawn of superfast carrier networks.
