Just gone and got a new phone with a Snapdragon 800 processor? Well you’re so last week, as Qualcomm has just gone and announced an updated processor called the Snapdragon 805. So what’s new? Well not much, but apparently it’s the ‘Ultra HD’ processor, which means it’s capable of 4k playback and Qualcomm is aiming the chip at all sorts of different devices, not just the ones you put in your pocket – with the chipmaker also looking to have the Snapdragon 805 put into Smart TVs and tablets.
As well as the bump in numbers, the Snapdragon 805 packs the latest Adreno 420 GPU, which the company claims is capable of 40 percent more graphical power than previous models, which is not something to scoff at. There’s also a Krait 450 CPU on-board with the standard four cores, each running up to a super speedy 2.5Gz, whilst transferring 25.6GB/second of memory max.
If you’re wanting to stream 4K video, then you’re no doubt going to need a processor which will support some super fast 4G speeds, and luckily the Snapdragon 805 will be exactly that, thanks to it including the Gobi MDM9x25 modem, which will support 150Mbps LTE 4. You’ll also be able to shoot 4K video, with the camera processor supporting gigapixel throughput and gyro-based image stabilisation – which means we should see more Lumia 1020-esque cameras in the future.
Of course it’s all well and good having such a great processor, but as with all processors it’s likely to be a power consumption nightmare, right? Well according to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 805 consumes less power despite “having an UltraHD theatre in your pocket.”
