After much speculation and looks of confusion, the Pepsi Phone P1 has been confirmed as a real smartphone.

Pepsi themselves will not oversee the manufacturing of the devices, instead licensed it’s brand name to Shenzhen Scooby Communication Equipment, who will do the leg work.

Not only have Pepsi not contributed to manufacturing, but it seems financial backing is not seen. On China’s equivalent of Kickstarter, Pepsi are crowd-funding for the device with discounted prices for early contributors. The crowd-finding will run until the 3rd of December, hoping to achieve its target of 3 million yuan, which equates to around £300,000.

Currently early contributors can get the device with a contribution of 699 Yuan (£70). What they will get for their money is a decent specced mid-range phone: 5.5 inch 1080p screen, an octa-core 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 chipset complimented with 2GB of RAM. 16 GB internal storage will be available, which can be expanded using a microSD card. Snapper is 13 megapixels with a 5 megapixels for the front-facing camera. A decent 3,000 mAh battery will keep it going all day and a rear fingerprint scanner.
