Its latest device has put the ‘plus’ into OnePlus and is a real crowd pleaser

Five years ago, would you know who or what a OnePlus was? I certainly wouldn’t. Yet, thanks to a loyal fan base and a message that premium features don’t always come at a high price, OnePlus is quickly becoming a brand whose new proucts are eagerly anticipated every year. Following the underwhelming OnePlus 5 and the much better 5t, the Chinese manufacturer has once again come out with a new design that includes the notch that we’ve seen throughout the industry and a glass finish on the back. The rear-mounted camera has been rotated 90 degrees and centred, similar to another couple of manufacturers we know, and is, on the whole, similarly impressive to previous iterations given the price. As with the 5t, a rear-mounted fingerprint reader is also incorporated into the design for security purposes as well as facial recognition which, at the time, made OnePlus the first manufacturer outside Apple and Samsung to offer it. Finally, one of the better features is the silder on the side of the device which is very handy when going into meetings or places that won’t take too kindly to an interruption. Instead of going into the device and changing the setting, you can slide between loud, vibrate and a do not disturb mode as and when you please.

The OnePlus 6 – the first in OnePlus’s line of flagships to feature an all-glass design – is the company’s most sophisticated handset to date. Addressing a common pain point among smartphone users, OnePlus is committed to ensuring its phones remain as fast and smooth as the day they came out of the box. As with any OnePlus device, the OnePlus 6 is beautiful and functional in equal measure – now with more screen than ever.
To provide users with as much screen real estate as possible, OnePlus designed the navigation bar so that it can be replaced with gesture control, freeing up even more viewing space for a cleaner look. The OnePlus 6’s dual camera system features a 16MP main camera, supported by a 20MP secondary camera. With an f/1.7 aperture, the 16MP main camera has been bolstered by a 19 percent larger sensor and OIS for outstanding performance in a range of lighting conditions. With Advanced HDR, OnePlus’s improved High Dynamic Range algorithm, the OnePlus 6 brings out shadows and enhances lighting in photos.
Our Review
As with the 5t, OnePlus has produced a great device with the 6. The design is aesthetically pleasing. The screen fills the body well and I’m glad OnePlus has kept the fingerprint reader on the back rather than forcing it on to the bottom. The back of the device is one of the best I’ve handled. A strange compliment, but the glass picks up considerably fewer fingerprints than the likes of HTC or Samsung.
Being picky, the camera bump is a bit disconcerting when it scrapes along the desk without its case on. The dual 16MP and 20MP shutter is a great camera and produces clean, clear shots. The portrait mode does well on the selfie camera and can produce some LinkedIn-worthy headshots, but I did find the blur a bit overactive and tries too hard to please – not necessarily a bad thing because, eventually, it got it right.
Overall, this is a very impressive device. The design is good, the screen fills the body and does anything you’re watching justice. The waterproofing is a miss but for the price that is no surprise and given that you’re getting a 6.3-inch display, dual camera, facial recognition, fingerprint reader, beautiful design and all the RAM you’d ever need for a lot less than £500, you could do a hell of a lot worse.
