After various teaser ads and comparison videos, Nokia has officially confirmed the Lumia 928.
On offer in the United States as Verizon from Thursday, the device has been the subject of much hype in the past few days, with Nokia releasing an ad in a magazine, a video comparing the newest Lumia’s camera capabilities versus rivals such as the Galaxy S3 and a splash page with not much on it.
The handset would be available in white or black exclusively from Verizon Wireless for $US99 ( £64) with a two year contract.
Nokia has been pushing the device’s camera capabilities, as with all its Lumia handsets, and the 928 includes its PureView imaging technology, including optical image stabilization.
The phone features an 8.7MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens and a Xenon flash.
Nokia North America vice president Matt Rothschild said the 928 excelled at capturing high quality video and blur-free photos, whether at a party, concert or sporting event.
“Verizon Wireless customers, we heard you and the wait is over – we’re excited to offer a Nokia flagship smartphone, specially designed and optimized for the nation’s largest 4G LTE network.”
The breakdown
The phone has a 4.5 inch screen with 1280 x 768 resolution and pixel density of 334 ppi, and is covered by Gorilla Glass 2.0. It measures 133 by 68.9mm and is 10.1mm thick, weighing in at 162g, which is pretty hefty but not as heavy as the Lumia 920 at 185g.
The device will run with a 1.5GHz dual core Snapdragon processor with 1GB RAM running Windows Phone 8; not a huge amount of grunt but a respectable amount of power. Its internal memory is a whopping 32GB, most likely for all those high res photos, taken with the 8.7MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss lens (f/2.0) including Optical Image stabilization and a Xenon Flash. The front facing camera is a 1.2 MP affair with 720p video.
The phone has a respectable 2000mAh battery billed to last more than 16 hours talk time on 3G.
UK launch?
Nokia is hosting a UK launch event tomorrow for the continuation of the Nokia Lumia story; whether that’s the Lumia 928 (which seems likely) or not, Vodafone have said they will stock the new device.
And What Mobile will be on hand at the event to report – so stay tuned.
