Foldable device reboot going for $1,500 in the US
Motorola’s newly announced Razr, a foldable redesigned version of its classic flip phone that sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, will be ranged exclusively by EE in the UK.
The device runs Android 9.0 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal memory. It has a 6.2-inch foldable screen, and two cameras. One is 16MP, with the front camera being 5MP.
The 6.2-inch display is 2,146 x 876 pixels, with a smaller 2.7-inch screen on the outside that is 600 x 800 pixels that can also be used for taking calls, changing certain settings and talking to Google Assistant.
It will be available in the US from January 2020, costing $1,500. EE is yet to announce pricing or availability, but customers can register their interest here.
Kantar Worldpanel’s director of consumer insights Dominic Sunnebo said of the device: “The release of the foldable Motorola Razr brings back a sizeable slice of nostalgia, for the original Razr was nothing short of iconic. With most Smartphones looking near identical, this clamshell form factor provides a refreshing change and one that consumers looking to stand out from the crowd will welcome. The design itself is in direct contrast to foldables to date, which have focused on creating a tablet like screen size from a Smartphone.
“The challenge Motorola will come up against is that the success it has seen over the last few years has come with providing excellent value for money low ticket models, like the Moto G and E. The Razr will retail at $1,500 – that’s some jump. Moto still holds brand strength in the US, so it’s likely it will perform well in what was its home market, but international expansion will be tough.”
EE Director of devices, partnerships & business development, Sharon Meadows said: “As the UK’s number one network, we always look to provide customers with the latest technology and experiences – whether that’s the fastest speeds, or ground-breaking smartphones. By partnering with Motorola on the new razr, our customers will get exclusive access to what already promises to be an iconic new smartphone. Only on EE will customers get the most out of the new razr with the UK’s best network, best in class unlimited plans and great swappable benefits.”
