The Alcatel A5 LED is the world’s first handset to with LED lights on the rear case which can be customised to music or themes.

The company, owned by Chinese parent company TCL, pulled wraps off the new A5 LED phone in Barcelona today (February 27).

Powered by an entry-level MediaTek MT6753 processor, it comes 2GB RAM, 8MP rear camera and 5MP front snapper with flash. The screen is a 5.2-inch 720p panel. Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, the device also includes Bluetooth 4.2, Cat4 LTE and a 2,800mAh battery.

Unique covers can be created on the phone’s back by customising the appearance of the LED lights on the screen. The LEDs can also be altered for different notifications or to match the volume changes in music that is playing. Another major feature of the handset allows users to synchronise the colour of LEDs with the theme they are currently using.

It will be available throughout Europe from May priced at ‚¬199. UK pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed.

Plenty of devices

Alcatel also showed off several other devices worthy of mention. The Alcatel A3 represented a cheaper variant of the A5 LED, with a 5-inch 720p display, MediaTek MT6737 and 1.5GB RAM. it has a 13 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front camera, plus a 2,460mAh battery. Unlike the A5 LED, it carries a fingerprint sensor on the rear.

The Alcatel U3 is marketed as a cheap 4G handset, fitted with a lowly 5-inch 480×854 display. Inside is the underclocked MediaTEK MT6737M (a variant of the standard chipset) and 1GB RAM. Internal memory is just 8GB, meaning you’ll need a microSD card.

The 2-in-1 PLUS 12 device was also unveiled. It comes with a 11.6-inch full HD IPS display, Intel Celeron N3350 processor and 4GB RAM. The product comes with 4G connectivity and is powered by the Windows 10 desktop operating system. Thanks to the design, it can act either as a tablet or laptop with the included detachable keyboard. Interestingly, the keyboard carries its own Qualcomm MDM9207 processor plus a 2580mAh battery. The spec sheet lists a whopping 128GB RAM in the keyboard portion of the device, which seems ridiculously high (we expect that is supposed to be ROM). Other major features include a fingerprint sensor, 5MP front camera and a digital microphone.
