Microsoft has quietly unveiled a new version of the Messaging application for Windows 10 Mobile which features full Skype integration.
Microsoft has released a new version of the messenger app for Windows 10 Mobile Preview which includes fully integrated Skype functionality. The company has been touting a fully integrated messaging experience for quite some time and this is the first we have seen of the application. Although it’s still in BETA, it feels surprisingly fast and complete. On downloading the app, users will also acquire Skype Video Preview which integrates directly within Messaging.
The experience is similar to iMessage on iOS, albeit a little rougher around the edges. When composing a text, users have the option to send in SMS or a Skype messaging format. The process was generally fluent, though the application didn’t find all of my contacts. As this is still a BETA, I’ll let it slide. At this time, we’re still unsure if the update was intended for the general public, as there is currently no companion application on the desktop.
The final version of the application is expected to debut in October along with the public release of Windows 10 Mobile.
