The highly anticipated LG G4 was launched at an event in London (April 28) and we found out all the details about LG’s new flagship handset.

We’ve heard a lot about the phone over the past few weeks, but confirmed details were finally revealed at the event.

LG G4

“We are living up to our promise of Innovation for a Better Life with a fashionable, premium smartphone that is more focused on delivering a balanced user experience that can compete with the best of the best,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

“We wanted to give consumers a truly human-centric device that combined the analogue sensibilities with technologies that delivered real world performance. From the design to the camera to the display to the UX, this is the most ambitious phone we’ve ever created.”

LG G4 design

The LG G4 will be available to buy in handcrafted, full grain leather in three colours: black, brown and red. It is also available in non-leather White, Metallic Grey and Shiny Gold colours.

Its design has been defined by what LG calls the Slim Arc – a curve that runs along the handset’s entire body. LG claims that the Slim Arc offers “20 per cent better durability than a smartphone in face-down drops and gives the smartphone a more comfortable and secure feel in the hand.”

The device weighs 155g and measures 148.9mm x 76.1mm x 6.3 – 9.8mm.

LG G4 camera

At the rear of the LG G4 is a 16MP camera that features a wide F1.8 aperture lens, which allows 80 per cent more light in than other cameras. In simple terms, this means pictures will come out more detailed. There’s also Optical Image Stabilisation that compensates for jittery hands and reduces the amount of blur. LG claims the camera can start up in just six-tenths of a second.

A Colour Spectrum Sensor also makes its way into the LG G4, a first for any smartphone. The Colour Spectrum Sensor enables the camera to take photographs that are close to what we see with the naked eye.

There’s an 8MP camera at the front of the LG G4 that comes with Gesture Interval Shot. Simply open and close your hand in front of the camera whilst its active and Gesture Interval Shot will take four different shots two seconds apart from each other.

Experienced photographers will be happy to hear that the LG G4’s camera comes with a manual mode. This will allow the user to control focus, shutter speed, exposure and white balance in every shot. Photographs can also be saved in RAW formats that allow for more detailed editing.

LG G4 screen

The LG G4 is the first smartphone to use LG’s new 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum Display. This offers improved colour, brightness and contrast. The screen also uses Advanced In-Cell Touch, which combines the LCD and touch sensor to give better touch sensitivity.

Android 5.1 Lollipop is the phone’s operating system, whilst a high-capacity 3,000AH removable battery powers the LG G4. LG claims that the battery, combined with a Qual-comm Snapdragon 808 processor, will allow the LG G4 to last longer than its predecessor, the LG G3.

Paul E. Jacobs, executive chairman of Qualcomm International, said: “LG and Qualcomm Technologies collaborated from the initial stage of the Snapdragon 808 introduction to expertly tune the technologies and make several of the LG G4’s unique features possible.

“The resulting G4 smartphone is an ideal example of how the best optimised technologies come together to meet consumers’ needs.”

Network-wise, the LG 4G is on 4G, LTE and 3G, whilst connectivity includes WiFi and Bluetooth.

LG G4 UX 4.0

LG G4

The LG G4 is the first phone to use the new U.X 4.0 user interface. LG promises that this interface is simple to use and responds to the needs of each user. It eliminates the needless steps that the user might make and provides configuration options for advanced users.

Its features include

  • Quick Shot – this allows you to take pictures without opening the camera app by double tapping a key on the phone’s back.
  • A new gallery – LG claims that you can quickly scroll through thousands of images and view them on a timeline. The Memories feature arranges photos and videos into an album based on when and where they were taken.
  • Event pocket – Users can create one, unified calendar by dragging appointments and activities from multiple calendars and social media. Once setup, you needn’t log into multiple calendars again.
  • Smart Notice – this provides personalised notifications for weather, travel and more by analysing how a user commutes to work and other regular habits. Smart Notice will issue personalised messages based on habits.
  • Quick Help – In the Smart Notice widget, users can search for instant answers they have about using the LG G4.
