Now here’s a something we never though we’d see. Samsung, darling of South Korea, one of the world’s technological giants, an unassailable monolith of a corporation, is being outsold in its own back yard… by LG.
Figures emerging from Korea are saying that LG’s latest handset, the LG G3, is beating the Samsung Galaxy S5 in sales – and at some pace. Right now the G3 is selling between 25,000 and 30,000 units every day (!). The Galaxy S5, by comparison, averaged 7,000 to 8,000 in sales during the same window following its launch.
That’s insane. Whatever way you look at it, those are some monster figures. LG is due a huge deal of credit for shaking up the mobile manufacturer equilibrium and hopefully showing Samsung that consumers won’t tolerate complacency.
The G3 isn’t out yet in the UK – a general June release date is all we know. We were extremely impressed with it when we got our hands on it at the grand reveal, certainly more so than when we got to grips with the Galaxy S5.
It’s not that the Galaxy S5 is a bad phone – far from it. It’s just that after using refreshingly excellent handsets like the HTC One M8 and, later, the G3, it’s fairly apparent that Samsung thought they could walk to the top of this summer’s sales charts on brand recognition alone. We’ve all been surprised with just how strong the competition has been this year, so we can’t say we blame them.
The G3 may have won this initial battle, but whether it can continue to sell at such a rate, and whether or not the Galaxy S5 continues to lag, is what will ultimately decide the war.
