LG are seducing developers to make Friends

LG are holding conferences to stir up interest for developers, to create modular Friends ecosystem.

LG stole the show at Mobile World Congress with their interesting modular feature for the LG G5. The unique modular accessories are called Friends, for those that have been living under a rock. LG’s plan to expand the Friends ecosystem by hosting a developer conference this week in Korea. A follow up separate event will happen in San Francisco in April according to ET News.

The purpose of the conferences is to encourage third-party partners and developers, to create their own LG Friends modules. LG has already signed up Danish audio company Bang & Olufsen, who have created LG’s Hi-Fi Plus, the 32-bit DAC plug-in which supports high end headphone use.

LG has not confirmed if LG Friends cross compatible with other devices. The successor to the V10 and the upcoming G6 have not been confirmed to work with the LG Friends modules for obvious reasons, but it will be interesting to see whether LG will make the modules backwards compatible.

Hardware and software developer kits will be made available in April, LG promises to create “a variety of programs that will support developers.” The event in Korea was attended by 200 small start up businesses. But the success of LG Friends depends on whether another company with the prestige of Bang & Olufsen, will get involved.
