iPhone access impossible for investigations

Apple have told a U.S. judge in New York that to access encrypted information on an iPhone is impossible.

The U.S. Justice Department put in a request to force Apple to help in their investigation. An iPhone was seized by the Justice Department and the information on the iPhone needed to be extracted, to further an investigation.

Apple have stated in court papers that 90% of its devices are running iOS 8 or higher, making it impossible to access the phone as the new software has strengthened encryption methods. A passcode is needed to access the information as even Apple will not be able to access it.

Apple devices running iOS 7 or lower can be accessed and Apple have stated that they will be able to fulfil requests on such devices.

“Forcing Apple to extract data in this case, absent clear legal authority to do so, could threaten the trust between Apple and its customers and substantially tarnish the Apple brand,” Apple’s lawyers wrote.
