Industry analysts IDC has made a bold prediction that suggests Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS will be the second most popular operating system by 2015, at the expense of Symbian, RIM and even Apple’s iOS.

Sales of smartphones will increase to over 450 million units by the end of 2011, compared to 303.4 million in 2010, according to the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker produced by the company.

Android will remain the clear leader, having gained even more market share, taking it up to 45.4% of the market, with Microsoft still a distance behind on 20.9% and Apple back on 15.3%.

Symbian will be the biggest loser, dropping from 20.9% to a measly 0.2% – a drop of 65%.
