Comments made by a Huawei executive have sparked fresh speculations that Huawei will make another Google Nexus smartphone.
Speaking to Gearburn at the South Africa launch of the Huawei P9, general manager for Huawei’s Consumer Business Group in SA, Charlene Munilall, revealed the Chinese manufacturer will once again take up the Nexus reins.
“We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way,” Munilall said, as well as hinting a 3G enabled MateBook was on the way.
If Munilall is correct, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise considering how successful the Huawei Nexus 6P has been. Although another Huawei manufactured Nexus device will contradict strong reports of HTC taking the mantle once again. HTC hasn’t developed a Nexus device since the first Nexus smartphone, the Nexus One.
A strong possibility is both Huawei and HTC, are developing Nexus devices, just like the current iterations where we saw LG and Huawei create the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, respectively.
Nexus 6P 2.0
It could be very possible that Munilall is talking about an upgraded Nexus 6P. Recently a Nexus 6P has been spotted on Geekbench scoring an unrecognisable higher score, sparking rumours of an upgraded Nexus 6P.
Huawei CEO Richard Yu confirmed to The Wall Street Journal there will be a VR ready phone from Huawei this year. If we stitch together what Munilall and Yu have stated, we’re most likely seeing a Nexus 6P 2.0, that will be able to run Daydream VR from day one.
Yu confirmed Huawei’s new VR ready smartphone, will be released this autumn.
