Originally released in January for iOS and more recently for Android, Mini Golf Match Up is hella cute.

A social gaming offering, the 3D cartoon world of Mini Golf Match Up, you guessed it, matches you up with either random buddies or friends via Facebook or email log ins.  So yes, you’ll need a net connection to play, but the game is pretty addictive once you get going.

Matching up with people means you each play your own game, and see how well you do against the other person.  You can view videos of opponents’ turns and purchase more gold for use in the Golf Store via real life money, if you wish.

The 3D graphics, including weird worm guys and a smiling golf ball, are very cute and the game is easy to play.  There are various golf courses that can be unlocked either via earned money or bought coins, and the game runs you through a quick tutorial before you start.

While playing, you collect stars and gems, and can zoom in or out for varying levels of determination of angle etc.  There are various social networking options if you’re keen to brag about your virtual golfing successes and you can also chat with the randoms you trounce if you so wish (although prior experience has warned What Mobile against this option…)  Hazards include said weird worm guys as well as octopi, dinosaurs, slopes, pipes and more.  You can earn achievements such as starting a specific course or fast fowarding through an opponents’ video.

The game play is easy and easy to work out, with responsive controls and a goodly amount of control over power and angle.  You can rematch buddies, find new ones, play multiple games and use do overs to help get a better score, if you so desire.

There are ads between games and on the main screen which are easy to get around but annoying and the home page is pretty durn busy which can get a bit confusing.  Also, prolonged inactivity seems to result in a forfeited game – sadface, but understandable.

All in all, it’s a neat idea and a cute game, which is free and keeps its freemium aspects to a reasonable minimum.
