The French Government has launched a new warning app to counter terrorism during Euro 2016.

SAIP (Système d’alerte et d’information des populations) is available for Android and iOS, available for download today. The app is available free in French and English and uses geo-location to deliver information regarding attacks happening in the space of 15 minutes. Users will be able to see alerts in eight different geographical locations, to check on friends or family during an attack.

Sharing alerts through social media is also available to help hasten alerts for when an attack occurs. It will also add accuracy for emergency services during times of turmoil. The French Government hopes with SAIP, France’s emergency telephone services won’t be overburden with calls.

The app also comes with advice on what to do when a disaster situation occurs. Aside from attacks, the app also advises on nuclear disasters, dam failure and hazardous materials.

A necessary precaution

Introduction of SAIP comes a day after the UK Home office issued an alert warning of “high threat from terrorism” during the football tournament. The app is also coming after a Frenchman was apprehended, when trying to enter France, with the intent to carry out a terrorist attack.

If you’re heading out to France for the tournament this Friday, you can download the app for free, on Android and iOS.
